My Best Business Investments (so far)

My Best Business Investments (so far)

It can be quite scary to become an entrepreneur, build your brand and be your own boss. There are many things you can do to help yourself with getting started and growing your business. Today I want to share with you some of my best business investments. Things that have been saving me money, time and sanity over the past two and a half years!

1. Investing in your Finances

Accounting

Having a good accountant is the first step. Unfortunately on Mallorca it can be quite hard to find a good one. I discovered a year in business that my accountant wasn’t doing my tax declaration (the only thing I was paying him to do) and I had the bad surprise to get a few fines. Not fun. After that I went on the quest to find an accountant I could trust and not double check everything he was doing. I’m still not sure I have the best one so if you have recommendations please do share them with me!

Payment & Automation Systems

Putting in place a booking, payment and billing system. I’ve wasted so much time sending out invoices, chasing payments and wondering what were the best ways to get my clients to pay me on time. I’ve ended up taking bookings through Calendly and payments through Stripe for clients in the UK. For clients in Spain I prefer to do my invoices through Debitoor as I can add the retencion to the invoice which is not possible through Stripe. Most of these changes I’ve made thanks to Chloe of Pink Flamingo Marketing, she has a great article about automation systems to put into place within your business that you should check out: https://pinkflamingomarketing.com/7-ways-to-automate-your-business/; and if you need help putting these systems into place reach out to her!

Money Coaching

One investment I really don’t regret! You might think you don’t need money coaching or that it’s a ‘silly’ thing but honestly we all have traumas related to money and talking about it and working on it is the best you can do to move to another level of financial freedom. As an entrepreneur it can be very difficult as well to put a price on yourself and your work so it’s very helpful to get a professional opinion on how to price yourself and what you’re worth. Don’t hesitate to book a free discovery call with Jenny to see if she could be a good fit for you. I promise you, you won’t regret it!

She also offers monthly financial check-ins which is helpful to keep on track with your business finances. Click here for more information about Financial Check-ins. Investing in Jenny was definitely one of the best business investments I’ve made.

2. Investing in your Marketing

Confident Marketing

Confident Marketing is a programme created by Chloe of Pink Flamingo Marketing to help small business owners to get confident with their marketing and actually promote themselves. I don’t know about you but I have massive FOPY (Fear Of Promoting Your(My)Self) and it’s so hard to tell people what I do and sell myself. I help many small businesses with their social media promotions but doing it for me was so scary.

During the first lockdown I joined Chloe’s programme and it really helped me to be more clear about what I want to offer, get motivated to update my services and website as well as showing up more on my own social media channels. I’ve also met many wonderful fellow entrepreneurs with whom I’m still in contact with or who I now work with.

Chloe is an amazing marketing mentor, she offers many different services (course, 1-1 mentoring…) to help you with your marketing.

Nurturing Business

Working from home on your own can get quite lonely, so another great investment is to have a support group. Mine is Nurturing Business, a business group for support, connection and expertise for self-employed people working from home. Founded by Jenny Bracelin and Chloe Morris, it’s great to have a group of fellow entrepreneurs to be accountable for.

What do you get when you join Nurturing Business?

  • Weekly online meeting to set your goals and co-work on your business.
  • Monthly workshop to inform, inspire and motivate you on the topics of business, marketing, money and personal growth.
  • A personal goals, finance and success tracker for accountability.
  • Private Facebook group to share successes, gain feedback and tech tips.

Have a look at Nurturing Business or other business support groups, it might really help you to get more things done with your business and feel less lonely as a small business owner!

I’ve put it in the ‘marketing’ section because I personally use the co-working time to plan out my social media posts and work on my marketing.

3. Investing in your Branding

One of the other amazing business investments I would recommend is to invest into branding. Branding is a way of identifying your business. It can include your logo, branding colours and font as well as merch. It’s important for a consumer to recognise your brand as soon as they see it, so the photos you use are very important as well.

Branding Photo Session

A branding photo session had been on my vision board for two years before I finally committed to it, and I wasn’t disappointed with the results. It definitely took my business to another levels. It’s what motivated me to update and relaunch my website as well as be more active on social media and promote myself as I actually now had photos to share my work and who I am. Most photos on my website are by the talented Mallorca-based photographer Emma Fenton. Couldn’t have been happier with the result! An investment definitely worth it!

A tip I have for you prior to doing your branding photo session is to make sure to wear the right clothes and colours during your photo session. For that you can get the help of a stylist. I personally took Leesa Whisker’s Colour Confidence online masterclass: a self-paced masterclass to discover the beauty of your natural colouring and your best colours for clothing, hair and make-up. Brand Identity

Having a brand identity is key for your customers and followers to know that the post, offer or product they are seeing is from your brand. The basics you need are a logo, brand colours and brand fonts. You can find a lot of fonts that you can commercially use for free on Google Fonts.

What I would recommend is to work with a graphic designer to define your brand identity and have a professional logo made. I have a few I can recommend to you so pop me a message at adele@yellothere.com if you need a recommendation.

In terms of social media visuals, if you want to do them yourself you can use Canva which is a great graphic design platforms where you can find already made templates to use or create your designs from scratch. If you need help getting started with Canva or want a few templates customised to your branding, check out my content creation services: https://www.yellothere.com/content-creation/#visuals
